Fashion Design 101: Principles of Design

In order to create a design that'll be visually pleasing to the audience, there are principles that should be followed. These are basic guidelines that every fashion design newbie should follow and professional fashion designer should experiment on.


Let's start then!


1. PROPORTION - Proportion is the cut and the relationship between the garment. The sizes of each part of the garment should be appropriate to the body shape of the wearer.

2. BALANCE - It's the visual equilibrium of a design. The concept is simple, whatever you put on one side of the design should also be present in the opposite end.

3. CONTRAST - Making an important area of the design emphasized by the use of color accents, opposing lines, and different textures.

4. REPETITION - Repeating elements for emphasis and / or contrast.

5. GRADUATION - Using elements that is either increasing or decreasing in size or volume. This is a way to direct attention towards or disguise body features.

6. RADIATION - Using an element from the design to fan out from a chosen point.

7. HARMONY - The combination of 2 or more elements to make a visually pleasing outcome.
